New England home
I I love most house styles, but my heart is drawn to the architecture of a Cape Cod style house. It’s fun to analyze photos of rooms, paying special attention to the design elements that I like. It helps me to think more creatively about my own home.
When I study a photo, I always ask myself questions about what attracts me, for example how to integrate this architectural detail? What colors are represented in this space and would they be pretty in mine? Even if your budget is tight or your home is a different style, there are often ideas you can take to any home you love. Otherwise, the best advice to take with you is that it might be better to enjoy or admire the look from afar or save it for the future!
I was scrolling through the photos of this charming Cape Cod style home from New England Home and thought I’d share some of my take-out tips with you! Enjoy the house below, then you will see my tips at the end of this article.
Here are 5 take-home tips from this charming Cape Cod home:
Add character with architecture
Coffered ceilings, wood wall panels and substantial moldings and trim add a touch of history, warmth and character. Open shelves in the kitchen and living room provide a more casual and relaxed atmosphere and allow personal collections such as books, memorabilia, accessories and personal touches to be displayed.
Create a consistent color palette
This home used a consistent color palette both inside and out, keeping the look simple and classic with a white wall background with neutral, blue, and warm accents.
Incorporate many types of textures for a warm and cozy feeling
The integration of many different types of textures is what creates a warm and cozy atmosphere. If you were to remove these textures, the feeling in the space would be colder or sterile. Notice the warm wood floors, woven baskets, cozy throws, woven mirror, fabric Roman shades, rattan, glass hurricanes, warm metal lighting, warm woven chairs in the kitchen.

Mix the patterns
Mixing patterns is a fun way to add a unique personality to your home! You can use a combination of patterns in a consistent color palette (try two colors!) For a more understated look. I love the mix of larger scale geometries, small scale patterns, subtle stripes, and solids in this house.

Use wall lighting for the mood
The wall lights make the rooms even more comfortable and charming! They diffuse light throughout the room, making an entire space warmer and more inviting. This house used wall sconces near the fireplace and the built-in bench in the dining room. I’m sure it looks so cozy at night!
