A Great Aftermarket Blade for Your Trustworthy Plane

I use hand planes a lot and give each a special role to play. My set of metal planes includes long and short, wide and narrow, expensive, but also very cheap eBay purchased and later restored by me. As a general rule, the wider the surface you need to plane, the wider the plane will be to deploy. Small planes are for short surfaces, edges, bevels and final grain. More importantly: I make sure I have a barely sharpened blade when taking on the challenges of figured or crazy-grained wood, and make sure I close the plane’s mouth tightly to help it traverse those difficult terrain flawlessly.

One of my beloved planes is the Stanley 6-ΒΌ in. Low Angle Block Plane of one of the latest lots made in Sheffield in England. This eBay-bought plane has a lot to offer: large size (narrow but long enough), an adjustable throat plate, a low angle blade, a convenient blade advance / retract mechanism, and, let’s not forget, a side adjustment feature intelligent.

The only problem with this plane is its mundane quality blade that requires frequent sharpening.

A few years ago I bought for my plane and aftermarket blade from Lee Valley. Curious about their new type of high-quality blades made from a mysterious alloy that could easily have been mentioned in one of JRR Tolkien’s books, the PM-V11 was considered the holy grail of blade steel. Tough, tough and not that hard to sharpen, this kind of carbide steel blend showed great potential, so I ordered one and tried it out.

After a few years of use, I must say that I love this blade. It is exactly what it claims to be.

For me, the two most important things in a blade are the ability to quickly bring it to the optimum sharpness without the fear of the cutting edge crumbling, as in some A2 blades, and the second criterion is that the sharpening of the edge lasts a long time. as long as possible between sharpening.

The Veritas blade met both of these criteria and enhanced the joyful use and long-term sharpening effectiveness of my trusty Stanly plane.
