II’m not a fan of multi-tools. In my experience they are marketing gimmicks that don’t do anything particularly well. But the Brooklyn Tool & Craft Hardware Store Saw is a huge exception to this rule.
This short panel saw is the ideal toolbox saw. Thanks to its ingenious tooth design, it rips and cuts quite well. His deep throat of teeth refuse to get clogged with sawdust. And while the bag is machine-made without apology, it really feels great in use, even after doing more than a dozen cuts in a row.
And if that’s all it offers, I’d still write a positive review. But the Saw hardware store is even more striking thanks to its commercial-like qualities:
■ It’s a test square! The front cheek of the hickory bursa is at 90 ° to the spine of the saw. And it’s really square enough for woodworking.
■ It is a rule! The spine is engraved with both metric and imperial measurements.
■ A protractor! Angles of 15 °, 30 °, 45 °, 60 ° and 75 ° can be arranged using the holes drilled in the saw plate.
■ A calculator! Convert fractions to decimals to metrics on the graph engraved on a face of the saw
■ Roll out the dovetails! Set a chamfer gauge to 1: 6 or 1: 8 using the corners on the saw plate.
■ And more!
Do you need all that stuff? During an intense two week workout where this was my only saw, I was surprised how often I used the “gizmos” on the 0.030 ″ saw plate, especially the try square function. After a while it became second nature to lay out my cuts and saw them all.
So what’s the catch? The blade is short – only 15 3⁄4“Long – so it will cut slower than a traditional 26” saw. You’ll also need to get used to the short saw blade so you don’t constantly pull the saw out of the cut and hit the blade against your work.
Second demerit: the engraving on the first version I used left black marks on my work for the first 100 cuts or so. After that, he didn’t mark the job. (The developers of the saw have apparently eliminated the problem, but it’s not a big deal after breaking the saw.)
Once these obstacles are cleared, you will quite like the saw. It is the perfect companion for logging trips. It is durable enough to use in the parking lot so that you can cut your work to fit your car. But it’s good enough for in-store finishing cuts too.
Oh, and another important feature: unlike other toolbox saws, this one can be resharpened; also offers instructions for filing directly on the saw plate. This is a permanent saw, not something destined for the trash after a few years of use.
