Flood-Proof House Designed to Break Free & Float
It has to be said: The design of this incredible New Orleans home from Morphosis is making waves in the architecture community. In the case of a flood, this house does not simply drift – rather, it rises on the water, but lives for vertical guides that avoid keeping it away, essentially the ultimate in luxury battery-powered life rafts.
Another project sponsored by Brad Pitt and his Make It Right Foundation, is designed to make this home modern, stylish and durable, but also to remain modest, functional and relevant. In summary: The design of this house is creative, innovative and its flood-proof flotation capability is all amazing, but it also compliments the historic residential beauty of the area.
While this has not yet been done in the event of a real live flood (and hopefully will never need to happen), in such an emergency the structure will inevitably have its feet as well as gas pipes, power lines, and ground. The surface will be free from other relations. And the city’s grid – carrying enough electricity for a few days and safely elevated enclosures while its residents await rescue.
“FLOAT House is a new type of house: a house that can maintain its water and electricity needs; A house that can survive the floodwaters generated by storms the size of Hurricane Katrina; And perhaps most importantly, a house that can be built cheaply to function as a low-income dwelling. ”
Respecting New Orleans’ unique culture and context, “FLOAT House optimizes mass production efficiency. The colorful vernacular houses of the Ninth Ward, which have been traditionally modified and personalized by local residents over time, reflect the vibrant culture of the community. The indigenous typology of FLOAT House Shotgun House is prominent in New Orleans and the Lower Ninth Ward. Like a typical firearm house, the FLOAT house sits atop a standing base. This innovative base, or “chassis”, integrates all mechanical, electrical, plumbing and permanent systems, and floats safely in case of flooding. Inspired by GM’s skateboard chassis, engineered to support multiple car body types, FLOAT House’s chassis is designed to support a variety of customizable home configurations. “
