Basic kit for hand tools

Tool: 45th Anniversary Woodworking Tool Set Buy Now

Producer: Garrett Wade

MSRP: $ 253

For a long time, there were really only a couple of options to get started using planes and other hand tools: shelling out big bucks for new premium quality tools that are ready to be cut out of the box or learning how to restore old tools. you ever got the blade on the wood before. But more recently, there are some overseas aircraft manufacturers offering a better compromise between price and out-of-the-box usability. For its 45th anniversary, Garrett Wade has put together a three-tool package that hits the sweet spot in terms of price and quality for the new hand tools.

This is important for someone new to the world of hand tools, who can’t invest a lot of money upfront or doesn’t have the time to devote to restoring tools. This kit includes a smoothing plane in size no. 4, a low angle monobloc planer and a flat bottom shaving machine.

Out of the box, all three tools are worked well where it counts and it took only about 44 minutes from unpacking and removing the oil to producing the chips. I’ve spent a little more time sharpening the blades and these tools have produced chips and surfaces that match all the premium tools I have in my shop. The block plane is my favorite of the bunch, because it’s easy to dial in the adjustable mouth. My only complaint with the no. 4 is that its mouth is a bit wide, so getting those super tight, silky shavings takes a bit of play. For around $ 250, you’d be hard-pressed to find a vintage toolset that you can install and use with minimal effort.
