Hand-Carved Wooden Spoons, Brushes, and More by Sophie Sellu

Sophie Sellu’s woodcarvings straddle the line between utility and sculpture. Based in London, the Manchester School of Art graduate took a summer course in wilderness survival skills and came away with a passion for wielding axes and carving spoons. In her parents’ garage she continued to work with wood and interest in her shapely designs led to the founding of Grain & Knot, her sole proprietorship.

An uncle who renovated period houses provided him with enough scrap wood some time ago to supply him for years. She was also helped by a loan, classes and a business mentor from Prince Charles’ youth charity, The Prince’s Trust. Sophie gave herself six months to achieve this; that was several years ago, and now she has such a passion for @grainandknot that every month or so, when she replenishes her online store, everything tends to sell out overnight.

Try it at home: in a bedroom transformed into an office, Sophie artfully displays her creations on a wall. (For more ideas, see Ways to Display Wooden Spoons, Craft Edition.)
