How to Do a Double Crochet Stitch

If you’ve landed here because you want to recreate the adorable granny square top or bag from our September 2021 issue, or because you just want to learn one of the basic crochet stitches, you’ve come to the right place. .

As part of our GH Stitch Club, we show beginners all the basic knitting and crochet techniques including this step-by-step tutorial to help you learn how to double crochet.

The double crochet stitch is very similar to a single crochet stitch (you can find our tutorial for this here) except that you wrap the yarn around your crochet hook – aka the yarn over – before each stitch, forming a row higher up. It gives you a different design look and can also help you move forward with your project faster once you’ve mastered how to do it (depending on what you’re creating, of course).

How to double crochet

Step 1: Once you’ve created your base chain, decide how many “skip” to start your double crochet (for Granny Squares, we skipped three).

2nd step: Then you will make a yarn over and insert your hook in the next stitch space (for Granny Squares this would be the fourth).

Step 3: Yarn over and pull (you should now have three loops on your hook).

Step 4: Yarn over again and pull through only two loops on your hook.

Step 5: Make a new thread and pull on the last two loops.
