How to Make DIY Paper Lanterns for Halloween

Use LED bulbs for your lanterns, which will not overheat.

Materials:

  • Paper lanterns
  • Handcrafted studs (we used plastic to make the finished lantern light)
  • Hot glue or craft glue

    Not:

    1. Secure the dowels to the paper lantern with glue and let dry.

          1. Mix the water and paint until you get the consistency of heavy cream.
          2. Pour paint over the paper lantern and let dry, working one side at a time until the entire lantern is covered.

              • Paper lanterns
              • The scissors
              • Cheesecloth or gauze

                Not:

                1. Cut a length of fabric, stretching it roughly and tearing it to create an irregular shape.
                2. Drape over a paper lantern.

                    Materials:

                    • Paper lanterns
                    • Gray acrylic or craft paint
                    • Water sponge

                      Not:

                      1. Mix a very light gray paint color by adding water until you have the consistency of heavy cream.
                      2. Dip a damp (not wet) sponge in the paint and dab it lightly on the lantern, mixing as you go (see a photo of the moon for reference).
                      3. Let dry completely.

                          Materials:

                          • Paper lanterns
                          • Halloween bugs clipart
                          • Printer paper
                          • Scissors or craft knife
                          • Mod Podge

                            Not:

                            1. Download our Halloween bug illustration and print on regular printer paper.
                            2. Cut out carefully with scissors or a craft knife.
                            3. Paint a section of the lantern with Podge mod, large enough to fit the paper cutout.
                            4. Lay the paper on top, using your finger to smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles.
                            5. Let dry.
                            6. Paint 1 or 2 more coats of Mod Podge on top and let dry completely.
