Inexpensive Mat for Your Wet Sharpening Needs

If you rely on the kitchen sink and the worktop as a sharpening station, then you know how messy things can get there. The stones, even those with rubber feet move on you, the water migrates everywhere, and therefore if you leave wet or dirty surfaces your spouse will certainly express his discontent.

A few months ago I searched the web for a valid and inexpensive solution to all of the above. I wanted to find a kind of coating to be placed on the work surface that could house the diamond stones and the Japanese water stone that I have. Woodcraft had just released his WoodRiver anti-slip silicone sharpening mat and Norton has its product, called Norton non-slip silicone sharpening stone mat. Both of these sturdy linings look promising but at around $ 19 they aren’t entirely cheap. However, during my online search on Amazon, I saw a product that caught my attention. This rudimentary lining should be a breeze for every parent of a child – in fact, you may already have it at home. I’m talking about those silicone linings that we put under the plates of our messy babies and small children. It’s called the product I decided to try Munchkin silicone placemats for children.

Includes two mats that incorporate a raised edge to prevent water from leaking onto the surface. The mat does not guarantee total sharpening without movement, but prevents the stone from moving most of the time, it also keeps the water inside the surface of the placemat. After working with this product for some time, I was quite impressed with its general advantages. I can’t wait to compare it to Woodriver and Norton products, but at $ 4 each this little helper is sincere.

This thin silicone mat does a good job, but even in extreme conditions it can slip or fold.

It is very easy to dry and clean the mat.

The raised edges are very practical in preventing the leakage of water.
