It’s always fun to see how the pieces evolve and change over time. Little by little, you can make a house feel like home! Kylee (my daughter) is here today to share her kitchen and dining room updates one year later, from move-in day to now.

Kylee here! The photo above is our kitchen sink area on moving day. We moved into our house almost a year ago and luckily for us the kitchen had already been remodeled before we moved in! So we didn’t have to do anything major, just a bit of styling and adding some personality. I shared an article about my glass cabinet style shortly after we moved in, which you can check out here, but I’ve made a few more updates since!

Simple updates can make a home feel like home.

One of the first styling changes we made was to replace the original light fixture with one that we liked a little better. The light shade of the original one collected bugs and was very difficult to disassemble for cleaning. We found this cute little globe light here! It gives a nice soft warm glow in the evening.

Another great improvement was to add a lined woven bamboo shade to the window above the sink. It not only adds style and a beautiful texture to the room, but also came in very handy for sun control and privacy. We’ve motorized it so you can raise and lower it with just the press of a button – so convenient!

The cute little teacups belonged to my mum, she and my dad bought them when they first married and I was so happy to find a place for them in our house!

The stainless steel contraption is our Berkey water filter, which we love! I used to use a Brita filter but it turns out these don’t really filter out the bad stuff so I made the switch and have never had better tasting water than my life. It filters all the gross stuff out of the water (even pond water. It’s totally apocalypse proof LOL).

Display objects that make you feel like you live there.

My husband bought me the most beautiful marble pestle and mortar for Christmas. It looks stunning displayed and is one of those pieces that you treasure and pass down for generations! It’s a great gift idea. This is the one he took from me. This one is similar!

We also recently received a new set of dishes from Crate and Barrel. We’ve used our trusty square dishes we received for our wedding for almost 14 years, but I’ve always wished we had round ones. I’ve loved the new ones so far, plus they look great in the cabinets! It’s fun to display your own items and get things for your new home. It’s a process of making a house feel like home in the first year, but it’s so rewarding to finally feel like it’s truly yours.

Stepping back a bit, here is the view from our dining room to the kitchen. This photo is from the day we moved in!

And here it is today!

Adopt a more welcoming and inviting space.

One of my favorite changes we made was to swap out the bulbs in the chandelier, doesn’t that make such a difference? ! It’s really the little things that make a house feel like home. If you follow me on Instagram, you know I’ve been obsessing over what to do for weeks, trying out multiple styles of bulbs. I even bought these amazing patterned lampshades, but eventually fell in love with these bulbs. Fair warning the light output on them is quite poor so I recommend having other light sources available for those times when you need more light but I like the softness and the way they have l air, both on and off.

The stools we bought for the island are the only ones I could find that were affordable and fit in the small space. Fortunately, they fit perfectly into the design! They come in multiple colors, too. Our new plaid curtains have added softness and I can’t believe I bought them on Amazon! They are lined and room darkening and are of such high quality. The dining table, chairs, and banquette bench you probably recognize from my mom’s old house!

It’s always fun to look back and see how far you’ve come in creating a home! Hope you enjoyed seeing our first year of progress!
