Niko Architect hide house in Russia beneath artificial green hill

Russian studio Niko Architect has landed a Teletubi-style house down an artificial hill, surrounded by conical skylights, which extend out of its roof.

In the landscape called the House, a three-bedroom house near Moscow is hidden under a lawn-covered hummox.

The Funky Green Roof is reminiscent of the Green domed house, which was home to Teletubus, a popular British children’s television show.

On the north side it opens with dazzling walls wrapped around a pond around a courtyard.

Unlike the green landscape, the flowing walls of the house are finished in smooth white render by the Nikko Architect.

The two sides follow the shape of the hill to provide winding paths and stairs.

They lead to a large, curved concrete front door.

The landscape’s roughly U-shaped plan is organized according to the motion of the sun throughout the day.

Light enters through the skylight above the living areas in the morning, and above the bedroom in the evening.

Glass walls are seen above the courtyard.

The spacious living, dining and kitchen area ends with a cave-like terrace that follows the shape of the hill above.

In the living area, a sunken circular seating area sits under a large skylight around a roof-mounted log burner.

A curved wooden partition separates it from the dining area.

An open corridor leads to the western wing, where the master bedroom reveals a deep window and is given a screen of wooden slats.

A sculpted white staircase leads to the first floor.

This upper storey has two additional bedrooms and opens onto the terrace facing north towards the pond.

A section of the wall folds around to form the roof to shelter the roof.

The courtyard, arranged around a central sculpture, ends with a wooden framed path, leading to a wooden platform to view the pond.

The interiors feature various pieces of artwork, furniture and sculptures that provide the focal point for open rooms.

Other houses hidden under the green hills include the house of Aires Mateus dug into a hill in Portugal and the Sun Rain Rooms of Tonkin Liu, an extension covering a curved green roof punctured by a skylight.
