Our kitchen and dining room renovation plans: the before photos

We are excited about the upcoming renovation of our new home. In this article I will show you the “before” photos of the living room, dining room and kitchen connected to the ground floor, as I begin to share the changes that we will be making, you will hopefully be able to -the, visualize them with these photos!

If you’re new here, we moved into our house last fall and we love it here! Besides the beauty of the island, the neighborhood, the spectacular views of the water and surrounding islands as well as the beautiful walks on the beach every day, we love the house and can’t believe we can live here. It’s all a dream come true!

You may remember that we invited my parents to move here with us. (You can read the 3-part post with the story of our move HERE). My parents sold their house in Lake Oswego, Oregon last fall. Over the past few months they have had fun planning a VERY small “little cottage” (it will have a small kitchenette, bathroom, living room/bedroom) all connected to our house on the ground floor. I will share more about this addition in future articles!

Some of the renovations we are planning will allow for the addition of their new space, as well as making the most of the compact rooms. Everything will work together to make the floor plan, layout and function of the house comfortable for our whole family.

Besides the plans for the small addition, we will work within the existing floor plan of our home. We keep the character of the house inside and out, but the updates will all be fresh and consistent as we make each space our own.

One of the decisions we made in this process is that we will move our existing kitchen into the current dining room at the back of the house! The current kitchen is nestled between the living room and the dining room, divided by two peninsulas. I’ve never been a big fan of kitchen peninsulas (remember when we brought ours out to our Craftsman home? See this kitchen before + after HERE), but once we moved the kitchen into the living room eat, we won’t need them here anymore so both will be removed.

I LOVE the current dining room, but I’m sure it will make an equally nice and bright space for a kitchen. One of the downsides of the new addition was that it required removing a window and also an outside door to our backyard (I’ll share more on that in a future post). But as is often the case, we realized that these changes had a positive side! The new kitchen will feature a set of beautiful French doors to the backyard, mirroring the set directly across the house into the living room!

I have long admired homes with windows that can see from the front yard to the back. We have a view of the water and the charming neighborhood out front, and a cozy yet private yard in the back. Although the addition of French doors in the back has made the kitchen design a bit tricky as we will only have two walls left to work with for appliances and counters, I think we have a very good plan. for a comfortable and charming layout, which I will share soon!

It will be worth it when we see light coming in through the new doors (similar to what we currently see in our living room!) and when we can access a wonderful garden space directly from the kitchen. You probably remember I loved the windows in our old Seattle kitchen and just being able to walk through our Dutch door to our side yard was my favorite! So I think it will be very inviting to have 8 feet of doors/windows in the back of this one and I will like it just as much.

The adjoining new dining room will have a round table with bench seating against the side wall (and we may be able to move the windows we haven’t used from the kitchen to that wall as well). I think the dining area will be cozy since it’s right next to the fireplace and will feel much more inviting when connected to the living room (without the current peninsula dividing the space).
