Precision and Power in a Handheld Grinder

You can tell when you have a good tool in your hand. The way he feels, the way he answers, the way he does everything you ask him. There is another dimension to a good tool, though: how the manufacturer supports it.

NSK America’s Nakanishi Emax EVOlution is one such tool. This electronically controlled brushless grinder pairs a base station with a few different power heads and customizable accessories (two headsets can be connected and controlled separately). It is also capable of being pedal controlled, with an overall speed range of 1,000 to 40,000 rpm.

We used other manufacturers’ rotary power tools in the shop for things like grinding a new crack on a stripped screw head or removing material in a hard-to-reach spot. But they never inspired confidence for serious carving or surface decoration. It was easy to lock these tools, so only light steps could be done. For removal of real material, it felt like using a 4-inch grinder with a light touch or a corded wire grinder were the best options (outside of a giant compressor and pneumatic tools).

The EVO gives you all the torque and power you need for carving in an ergonomic and easy-to-use package. For surface carving, the high torque head worked best with our choice of small carving cutters. The tool did everything we asked of it: create patterns and cavities on the surface of the planks, quickly remove material to shape some organic shoots, even make a small incision on the side of a plane.

This versatility speaks to the high quality of the instrument. This platform is an excellent choice for serious carvers looking for an electric carving system. As your skills and ideas evolve, EVO adapts to how you want to work. With the variety of bits, burrs, wheels and other accessories, the possibilities are virtually endless. When it comes to polishing and sanding, this tool shines again. The mini belt sanding attachment allows us to quickly achieve a quality finish surface in places where the only other option was laborious hand sanding.

Of course, like all tools, you get what you pay for and this tool is an investment. The Emax EVOlution starts at $ 1160 for the basic system with controller, motor and accessory for grinding, and adding additional heads and accessories costs a few hundred dollars. But with professional-grade quality and support, it’s still a bargain. To find out more about Emax EVOlution, contact Cherry Tree Toys at 608-302-4675, take a look at their website or at
