I gave our little guesthouse a quick summer refreshment last week. It’s nice to have guests in the house again, even though most of our guests are family! 🙂 I have an ever growing collection of comforters that are so fun to use on beds! A mix of patterns can make a small room even more charming, cozy and inviting.
Gather what you have or add something new. In this room, I used new teal and white striped sheets, a white waffle weave blanket, a reversible floral and polka dot quilt, decorative stitched and quilted pillowcases, our classic navy striped pom pom curtains, and white and a fringed pillow. None of this has come in an ensemble or “matches”, but I think it’s more charming that way! I love the cottage look.
Mixing and matching can also be an affordable way to decorate.
Here are some simple tips you can use to start decorating with patterns:
If you are nervous about patterns or are new to mixing them up, try starting with a single pattern on a quilt (or a reversible quilt that will match patterns for you!). Or, get a set of patterned leaves and build from there!
Stripes are still a classic and can easily be paired with a floral or geometric pattern or all three.
Choose a color plus white. You can use multiple shades of one color and white together, it will always look great.
If you want to gradually switch to mixing multiple patterns, use the formula “one color whiter” to make the combinations more consistent. Or go fancy with several shades of the same color.
If you want to use two of a pattern together, like two flowers or two stripes, just vary the scale. One bigger and one smaller.
If you want a really bold pattern or color in a room, try letting it be the star of the space. Smaller scale patterns and softer colors can play a supporting role.
You can also mix various textures and details like pom poms or pom pom fringes to give the room an even more special feel.
