The best secrets for mixing patterns in your home

reo Have you ever wondered how to mix and match designs in your home? I know it can be hard to figure out what “goes” with what! In today’s article, I’m going to share some of my secrets for mixing patterns and showcasing some of my favorite mix and match pillows from Serena & Lily to make it easy to see a variety of patterns together (these pillows are currently on sale, now is a great time to get discounted pillows and throws + free shipping)!

How to mix patterns (tips from my book The Inspired Room):

There are many ways to effectively blend patterns in a room. Consider starting with a limited color palette (such as one color plus white) in patterns of different scales. These tips can help you mix, match, and experiment.

  • Two similar patterns will look best together when connected by a common color or color tone.
  • You can combine three or more designs in one room, try them on different scales to get the most pleasing effect.
  • Just start! Choose a large-scale pattern and a small-scale pattern in the same color family. Mix the solids.
  • You can use more than one strip, just make sure one strip is wide and one is narrow.
  • Use a neutral on the walls and floor to unify the designs of the room.
  • Add interesting patterns with art or objects in a neutral room for a nice balance.
  • Wood grains and stone contribute to an organic pattern in a room, so be sure to factor those into the mix as well.

In general, it is safer to mix patterns of a similar style (traditional with traditional or contemporary with contemporary). But there will be times when you want to be a little more daring.

Most importantly, give yourself permission to experiment! If you like a combination, break the rules as much as you want!

I am sharing several pillow combinations that you can mix and match below!
