Most carpenters have the knack of designing a makeshift planing stop from a block of wood and some old saw blade, but the precision engineering and price of Benchcrafted’s new toothed planing stop raises the bar. question: why would you want it?

The folks at Benchcrafted have made a name for themselves by reinventing and elevating classic workbench hardware, and toolmakers’ toothed planing stop is no different. The finish of the retainer is less refined than some of Benchcrafted’s other offerings, but the bolt and barrel two-point nut mounting design is sturdy and clever. Standard mounting hardware keeps the price reasonable, while also allowing for quick installation and easy maintenance throughout the lifetime of use. I was able to thread and install the hardware into an existing wood stop with tools common to most workshops. Simple enough, and I was back to work in less than 30 minutes.

The teeth are sharp and will leave marks in the final grain, but they are also tough. Combined with a notched batten and retainer, this retainer rivals the holding power and utility of a tail vise. Working thick supports was no problem and I was able to lower the stop enough to secure thin boards like 14“Easily. The low profile design kept the teeth in the sweet spot of the wood and out of the path of the plane’s blades.”

Toothed planing stops are an absolute necessity for serious handplane users and Benchcrafted has managed to give a unique stamp to this classic shape. They also found a way to offer it at a price that anyone can afford. Highly recommended.
