If there’s anyone who knows the importance of keeping a kitchen organized, it’s John Kanell. The founder of Preppy Kitchen is constantly testing new recipes – ranging from edible cookie dough to corn casserole – and shares his findings with 1.34 million subscribers on his YouTube channel.
But he also knows that the presentation is almost as important as the food itself, so he asked interior designer Amy Beth Cupp to design a built-in pantry that is both functional and beautiful. In the video above, he details how he stores his casual and seasonal table linens, holiday dinnerware, and formal dinnerware. Everything has its own drawer with soft-close slides, so John can see exactly what’s inside and avoid damaging breakable items by closing them.
Even if you’re working with a smaller space, John suggests grouping items – linens, in particular – by color or season. This way you don’t have to dig through red and green towels to find your springtime hues.
If you’d rather keep things organized based purely on function, that works too – it’s your kitchen, after all. “Do what works for you. I like things to be grouped by color, function and size,” he explains. “For example, I have an entire drawer with just nuggets in it, and an entire drawer with just spices in it. I organize the spices by use – the spices for the curry, the spices for the holiday baking, and the remainder is alphabetical. “
