Sometimes the direction of the wood grain is so unruly that planing gets you in trouble – tearing is inevitable. Faced with this situation, the hand tool to be picked up is a scraper. A card scraper is fine for small areas, but to avoid wrinkles or dips, it is best to use a scraper. Here is a small one from Veritas that is a pleasure to use.
About the size of a plane and sturdy, this one-handed tool has a unique feature borrowed from the Stanley # 80 scraper: a set screw that bends the blade. The curved blade allows you to easily adjust the depth of cut and prevents the corners of the blade from digging and leaving ridges. The 2 ″ wide blade also extends the full width of the tool body, like a rabbet plane, so you can scrape up to an angle.
As with many other Veritas tools, this isn’t simply an updated version of an old design. It is new and different and very well designed. This unique aircraft would make a nice addition to a serious user’s hand toolset.
