Limited confidentiality

High-rise apartments are often smaller than low-rise apartments and other rental options. Privacy can be compromised in high-rise apartments with thin walls and noisy neighbors.

Decreased social interaction

On the other hand, if you crave community, a high rise apartment might not be for you. Since skyscrapers have so many apartments and less common space, it’s much less common for people to connect to each other. Many high-rise apartments lack the features that encourage social interaction, such as swimming pools and clubs, as low-rise apartments often do. You’ll find exceptions, of course, but you’ll likely pay a luxury premium for those perks. While residents of high-rise buildings are generally cordial, they may be more inclined to stay to themselves than residents of low-rise apartments.

Exposure to high winds and limited private outdoor space

Balconies are also less common in high-rise apartments than in medium and low-rise apartments. Even if your apartment has a balcony, strong winds can prevent you from enjoying this outdoor access. High-rise apartments generally do not have gardens or other outdoor spaces like smaller apartments, and minimal private outdoor space exists. If you like spending time outdoors alone, living in a skyscraper can be difficult.

Manage elevators

While elevators are convenient, there are some drawbacks to consider. While some skyscrapers have multiple elevators, others only have one, and the waits can be long. You might be concerned if you have young children who want to walk to the park or a dog who needs to use the bathroom. If your apartment is near the elevator, you can also hear the noise of people coming and going.

Elevators will not operate during power outages. If the power goes out, you might find yourself climbing stairs anyway. This could present a serious problem if you are older or if you have health issues that reduce your mobility.
